The alternative and complementary healing modalities we use at Kink Aware Healing have been found to be particularly effective in treating depression. Different services provided by our Kink Aware Healing practitioners can provide relaxation, and relief from depressive symptoms, as well as helping you cope with some of the causes of depression.
Some of the beneficial services our Kink Aware Health Care Professionals can provide to assist you in dealing with depression are:
Acupressure: Acupressure is useful in alleviating many of the physical symptoms as well as the sluggishness of mild depression. Acupressure is performed by applying steady, firm pressure on specific meridian points along the body. When stimulated, these spots, which are identical to acupuncture points, correspond to and affect other parts of the body.
According to ancient Chinese medicine, depression can occur when you repress certain emotions, such as anger or guilt. Using anti-depression acupressure points helps release this blocked energy.
Reflexology: Reflexology works to relieve symptoms of depression by stimulating specific acupressure points/nerve endings in the feet and hands, which in turn:
- Causes increased blood flow to your organs;
- Eliminates toxins in your body;
- Stimulates your lymphatic system;
- Activates your endocrine system;
- Induces a state of relaxation,
- Restores harmony to both your sympathetic and para-sympathetic nervous systems;
- Encourages a release of the natural feel-good hormones, endorphins, Endorphins have been scientifically shown to reduce your body’s stress response;
- Decongests energy pathways, allowing for optimal nervous system functioning.
Reiki: There are many natural therapies or holistic approaches to treating depression, one of which is Reiki. Many Eastern health practitioners believe Reiki is helpful for treating depression.
Reiki is a form of alternative therapy, like acupressure. Reiki is a Japanese technique and similar to massage, Reiki often works to relax the you and help you overcome blockages or obstacles to healing. A healer will use Reiki, often called “energetic medicine” to help you overcome stressful feelings and energetic imbalances in the body.
Scientists are now beginning to recognize the energy fields that surround human beings and all living organisms. For centuries Eastern philosophers worked with energy, manipulating it, to help improve health conditions, including emotional and physical ones.
According to the International Center for Reiki Training, millions of people try Reiki to help overcome physical and emotional health problems, including depression.
Guided Imagery and Relaxation: Guided imagery is a form of focused relaxation that helps create harmony between the mind, body and spirit. Our Kink Aware Guided Imagery professionals teach you to create calm, peaceful images in your mind — a “mental escape” for therapeutic purposes.
Exercise: Different forms of exercise can lower your stress, relax you, reduce depression and increase your energy, balance, and flexibility. In general, exercise is a safe, effective, and easy way to improve your well-being; but, always check with your doctor before starting a new program.
Meditation: Meditation is sometimes described as an altered state of consciousness. It is a form of relaxation that, unlike sleep, is entered into purposely. Meditation is usually practiced regularly — for at least 10 minutes each day. While your body is at rest, the mind is cleared by focusing on one thought, sometimes a word, phrase, or particular scenery.
In a 2 study by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Toronto, ON, Canada,patients who were guided in meditation by a trained practitioner weekly over an 8 week period experienced as much relief from their depression as a similar group who were treated with standard antidepressant medication!
Massage: Massage uses touch to provide relaxation. While there are variations of massage, they all work under the general principle of the connection between body and mind — that when the body is relaxed and at ease, the mind is promoting better health, less depression and overall well-being. Some examples of massage include shiatsu, neuromuscular therapy, spinal release therapy, Swedish, and the sports variation.
